In 1991, Frank Rich in the New York Times opined that the best musical score of the year wasn't on Broadway, but in the new Disney animated film, Beauty and the Beast. Three years later it was on Broadway, the first of the series of Disney blockbusters that have brought family-friendly fare back to the legitimate stage. You know the story: a man's bestial nature is tamed by a woman's love, and a woman learns to look more than skin-deep to find her prince.
