Auditions: Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical

The Players Club of Swarthmore are holding auditions for the Main Stage production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical on Saturday, December 3rd & Monday, December 5th by appointment.

Auditions (age 8-14): Saturday, December 3rd 1-3PM & Monday, December 5th 6:30-8PM
Auditions (age 16 & older): Saturday, December 3rd 3-5PM & Monday, December 5th 8-10PM
Callbacks (by invite only): Tuesday, December 13th
Performance dates: April 21-23, 27-30, & May 4-6.
Where: Auditions, callbacks, rehearsals, and performances will be held at the Players Club of Swarthmore (614 Fairview Rd, Swarthmore, PA 19081).
 
Audition are by appointment. Pre-registration form is here.
 
We will contact you with a time slot prior to audition night. If you are not able to attend in-person, you may make video submission arrangements with the director.
 
Auditions, rehearsals, and performances will be held in-person at the Players Club of Swarthmore (614 Fairview Rd, Swarthmore, PA 19081). Plenty of off-street parking and accessible by Septa Regional Rail and Bus. Rehearsals will begin January 22 and will be held 3-4 days a week (mainly Sunday, Monday and Wednesday). There will be a full week of technical/dress rehearsals in April. Most rehearsals will begin by 6:30pm during the weeknights and in the afternoon/evening on Sundays. Some of our rehearsal and performance spaces are only accessible by stairs. Please let us know if you need accommodations.
 
COVID SAFETY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: All performers, staff and volunteers must provide proof of up-to-date vaccination against COVID-19 to participate in a production.
 
If cast, you will be asked to sign a form acknowledging potential COVID risks and agreeing to comply with PCS’s most up-to-date health and safety guidelines through the length of the production. All adults will also be asked to obtain a free criminal background check and child abuse clearance to participate in the production.
 
The Players Club of Swarthmore and the Matilda production team are committed to diversity and inclusion. As such, we encourage performers of all races and ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, and abilities to audition.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
For auditioners ages 8-15: Please prepare one song and one short monologue. Details below:
 

SINGING – Please prepare one of the song selections below from Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical. The exact cut is also noted in the sheet music – you will not be expected to sing the full song. Have fun with your song and select a song that allows you to showcase your vocal and acting abilities.

 

ACTING – Please prepare one of the monologues found here. Monologues can be read by anyone, regardless of the character’s gender. We highly recommend memorizing your material, but you are more than welcome to hold your monologue if you need to. You may be considered for multiple characters in the show and not just the character you choose for your monologue.

 

A piano accompanist will be provided. There will be no dance call during initial auditions.

 
For adult auditioners ages 16 and older: Please prepare one song and one short monologue. Details below:
 

SINGING – Prepare 16-32 bars of a song of your choosing in the style of the show. Please choose a song that will showcase a strong character as well as your vocal range. All auditioners must sing. Songs from Matilda are allowed.

 

ACTING – Please prepare one of the monologues found here. Monologues can be read by anyone, regardless of the character’s gender. We highly recommend memorizing your material, but you are more than welcome to hold your monologue if you need to. You may be considered for multiple characters in the show and not just the character you choose for your monologue.

 

A piano accompanist will be provided. Please bring a copy of your sheet music. There will be no dance call during initial auditions.

 
CONFLICTS:
Please refrain from auditioning if you have any conflicts with tech week April 16 – 20 and/or show dates (see above).
 
CASTING BREAKDOWN:
All roles are open. We acknowledge that many roles we list fall on gender binary, but invite transgender and non-binary performers to audition for the roles they most identify with. We are seeking 24 energetic, dynamic performers of all ages to fill the following roles –
 

Matilda Wormwood (Female, 8-15)
The hero of our show. An imaginative girl who is clever and wise far beyond her years. She has a thirst for learning that cannot be quenched. Mature for her age and charismatic, but not pretentious. Looking for a strong singer and actress. This is a very demanding role with the majority of the show on stage and multiple very long monologues.
Vocal Range: A3 – D5

 

Bruce (Male, 8-15)
Matilda’s classmate. He is subject to extreme punishment by Miss Trunchbull. Just a nice, kind boy with a love for sweets.
Vocal Range: C4 – E5

 

Lavender (Female, 8-15)
Matilda’s classmate and best friend. Adorable, innocent and a little bit mischievous. Extremely likable and energetic.

 

Michael Wormwood (Male, 12-18)
Matilda’s older brother. He is not the brightest, always consumed by TV/video games and is clearly the favorite child. Must have good comedic timing,

 

Miss Agatha Trunchbull (Any Gender)
The tyrannical headmistress at Matilda’s school who despises children. An imposing and active character. Looking for a performer who is comfortable and able to act out physical activity.
Vocal Range: A2 – G4

 

Miss Honey (Female)
Matilda’s kindhearted teacher. She is tired of living in fear under Miss Trunchbull. Sweet, honest and caring. Will do anything for her students.
Vocal Range: F3 – D5

 

Mr. Wormwood (Male)
Matilda’s uncaring father. A slimy, greedy used-car salesman. Comedic actor with strong improv skills.
Vocal Range: D3 – A4

 

Mrs. Wormwood (Female)
Matilda’s self-absorbed, negligent mother and an amateur ballroom dancer. Over the top, full of energy and has little patience with her family. Strong comedic actress.
Vocal Range: A3 – F5

 

Mrs. Phelps (Female)
A nice librarian who loves her job. She is compassionate, a little naive and lives for a good story. Non-singing and non-dancing role.

 

The Escapologist (Male)
A character in a story Matilda tells to Mrs. Phelps who comes to life in their imagination.
Vocal Range: C3 – E4

 

The Acrobat (Female)
A character in a story Matilda tells to Mrs. Phelps who comes to life in their imagination. Dancing or acrobatic ability is a plus.
Vocal Range: D4 – A4

 

Rudolpho (Male)
Mrs. Wormwood’s over-the-top ballroom dance partner. Full of himself. Strong dance role.
Vocal Range: D#3 – A4

 

Ensemble
Doctor, Children’s Entertainer, Sergei, Cook, Mechanic, Henchman, Kids (age 8-15; Amanda, Nigel, Eric, Alice, Hortensia, Tommy), Parents, Big Kids (Played by adults age 16+. A group of energetic dancers/singers)

 

The Players Club of Swarthmore is an all-volunteer organization. All roles are unpaid and Non-Equity.
