Christopher
Sergel's dramatic adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer-Prizewinning
novel explores racial tension in Maycomb County, Alabama
during the Depression.
A black man has been accused of assaulting a
white woman, and the defense is assigned to Atticus
Finch, a reserved, gentle widower with a powerful sense
of integrity.
The audience watches through the eyes of his
children, Scout and Jem, and their friend Dill, as a
community comes to grips with fundamental questions
about honesty, friendship, bigotry, hatred, and heroism.
The children learn that "courage isn't a
man with a knife" but rather the strength to tackle
even the impossible when it's the right thing to do;
and Atticus himself comes to realize that justice must
occasionally be tempered with mercy.
